HAZRED: Working with small businesses to reduce hazardous wasteBeech Builders respond to the environmental plea of the government by joining the HAZRED project co-funded by the EU Life Environment Programme. HAZRED is a three-year project that aims to demonstrate how working in partnership can assist in preventing and reducing hazardous wastes produced by small and medium-sized businesses.

Hazardous waste contains substances or has properties that might make it harmful to human health or the environment. The term 'hazardous' does not always mean that waste is necessarily toxic, though some can be.

HAZRED is working with 120 SMEs across six priority sectors in the UK and Ireland. The priority sectors are:

  • General construction/building
  • Photographic processing
  • Treatment and/or coating of metals
  • Manufacture of speciality organic chemicals
  • Maintenance & repair of motor vehicles
  • Manufacture of machinery and equipment

For the duration of the project Beech Builders are showing our commitment through the following action plan:

  • Identify the quantity of waste disposal
  • Identify a “work profile” to assess waste disposal
  • Identify hazardous waste such as adhesives, sealants, solvent-based paint, etc.
  • Identify what happens to liquid waste
  • Provide separate disposal for hazardous waste
  • Inform employees on waste segregation

We believe Beech Builders is a representative of small builders in terms of the waste they produce and the difficulties they face in understanding which of their wastes may be hazardous, raising awareness amongst their employees, and in finding appropriate disposal options.  We are keen to voice these concerns in the hope that issues can be raised and solutions found by joining the HAZRED project.
